Dentures are either complete or partial depending on the patient’s need. Those who are missing all of their teeth, whether top or bottom, need completes. While patients who are missing some teeth, will benefit from partials.
These removable mouth appliances are further defined as either conventional, immediate, or overdenture. Conventionals are custom-made and inserted after final tooth removal and gums have healed. These can take months to receive but are preferred due to their ideal comfort. Immediates are convenient because they are given to you the same day as tooth removal. Once the gums heal, however, the patient needs to return to readjust the dentures. Lastly, overdentures use existing, healthy teeth or dental implants for attachment.
Dentures are fragile, so be sure to handle them with care. Also, brush your dentures at least twice a day and store them in clean water. Also, brush the inside of your cheeks, tongue, and palate to remove bacteria. Proper denture and oral hygiene maintenance will also prevent odor and mouth sores.
