Periodontal Disease | Gum Disease

Periodontal disease (gum disease) is a chronic inflammation of the gum tissue. The inflammation usually occurs due to poor dental hygiene. Left untreated, patients may experience tooth loss and damaged gums. Contact us if you are currently experiencing these symptoms:

  • Bleeding gums
  • Receding gums
  • Red, swollen gums
  • Halitosis (bad breath)
  • Tooth movement

These symptoms are common, however, it is possible for patients to not detect any of them. Routine dental exams will detect gum disease early on and prevent serious complications like tooth loss. Gum disease has also been linked to the following health issues:

  • Heart disease
  • Cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Gastrointestinal disorders
  • Stroke
  • Kidney disease
  • Premature births
  • Low birth weight babies

Gum disease is checked by examining the gums for bleeding, swelling, and firmness. The gum pockets are also measured. Based on the findings, treatment will vary. A common treatment is a deep teeth cleaning known as scaling and root planing. Gum pocket reduction may be an option as well depending on the severity. It is important that the patient maintains proper dental care to further eliminate the disease. If the patient smokes or has diabetes, these factors must be corrected because it can delay the healing process.

Medication may also be prescribed. Antibiotics can treat the disease. Chlorhexidine ia an antibiotic mouthwash used to reduce the bacteria. Another antibiotic, PerioChip, can be placed inside the gum pockets to eliminate the bacteria.

Prevent gum disease

Gum disease prevention is the best solution for every patient. While some patients may be more prove to the disease due to genetics or health reasons, good dental hygiene will help. Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss daily. Be sure to visit us routinely for exams and professional teeth cleaning. Also, eating a healthy diet and avoiding tobacco use will help.
