Dental Crowns Lexington MA

Dental Crowns | A dental crown is a tooth-like cap commonly used to protect teeth that are weakened or damaged. They are also used in conjunction with dental implants and bridges for teeth replacement. Dental crowns fully restore the tooth’s functionality and appearance. Also, crowns can be made of various materials like metal, ceramic, porcelain, and porcelain-fused-to-metal. Dental crowns are custom-made for each patient to fit naturally and comfortably.

Dental crowns are used to:

  • Restore damaged or chipped teeth
  • Protect a tooth with a large filling (ex. root canal procedure)
  • Cover a misshapen or discolored tooth
  • In conjunction with dental implants and bridges

What is the procedure?

Crowns are custom-made and usually require two visits. Each procedure may slightly vary, but the following includes a general summary of the procedure. The tooth is shaped in order to receive the crown. Next, a mold is used to make an accurate impression of the area. This mold is then sent to a laboratory along with X-rays to create your custom fitting crown. The permanent crown typically takes a couple of weeks to create. In the meantime, your dentist will give you a temporary crown. The second visit involves attaching the permanent crown to the receiving tooth and cementing it in place. Your dental crown should last between 5 to 10 years with proper dental care and maintenance.

How should I care for my dental crown?

Dental crowns require normal dental hygiene. Brush twice a day and floss daily. Also, avoid biting on hard surfaces and chewing hard food. Although your crown is sturdy, it can become damaged if not properly sought after. Contact our office right away if you notice damage or if the crown becomes loose.
