Sedation Dentistry Lexington MA

Sedation dentistry is a safe choice to relieve the anxiety and phobia that many patients have at the dentist.  Intense anxiety can prevent you from attending routine dental visits. With sedation dentistry, you can relieve anxiety and fear. Maintaining good dental hygiene will become easier and less stressful. This practice allows a patient to stay awake during the dental procedure while remaining calm. Also, the sedative can be taken orally to help patients that may be afraid of needles. Common sedation methods include nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation. Each option offers great results but some patients may prefer one over another due to anxiety level or length of procedure. Your medical history and current medications will be reviewed before administering the sedation.

What are common sedatives used in dentistry?

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative commonly known as laughing gas. Patients will wear a nasal mask and breath the sedative throughout the procedure. Nitrous oxide is known to effectively relieve anxiety and reduce pain.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation may be ideal for patients that do not want the nasal mask or who may be afraid of needles. Patients will not remember much of the procedure other than feeling comfortable and relaxed.

IV Moderate Sedation

IV moderate sedation is inserted through the vein and is known to work faster than other methods. During the procedure, the sedation level is adjusted accordingly.
